The Steepwater Band przenoszą tradycję rocka lat 60-tych i 70-tych w XXI wiek, dodając mu współczesnej świeżości. Zespół jest wierny swoim korzeniom – amerykańskiemu bluesowi, którego we własnych kompozycjach zgrabnie „tłumaczy” na język nowoczesności.
Zespół powstał w Chicago w 1998 roku jako trio. Nazwa pochodzi od statku towarowego zobaczonego przez wokalistę i gitarzystę Jeffa Massey’a w porcie nad jeziorem Michigan. Stylistycznie można ich określić jako ukłon w stronę bluesa brytyjskiego przepuszczony przez filtr współczesnego rocka. Choć Jeff Massey, Tod Bowers i Joe Winters zaczynali jako dość ortodoksyjne trio bluesowe koncentrujące się na interpretowaniu bluesowych standardów, poprzez lata nie oparli się wpływom psychodelii, americany, jazzu, czy rocka. Z czasem przekształcili się w kwartet (w 2012 roku do pozostałej trójki dołączył gitarzysta Eric Saylors). Obecnie repertuar zespołu składa się głównie z utworów autorskich.
W 2000 roku po raz pierwszy wystąpili na Chicago Blues Festival. Rok później wydali pierwszy długogrający album zatytułowany “Brother to the Snake”. Obecnie mają na koncie kilkanaście wydawnictw audio i video, a ich utwory zostały wykorzystane w wielu programach telewizyjnych oraz filmach. Koncertują w całych Stanach i Europie, dzieląc sceny m.in. z Gov’t Mule oraz Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Minęły dwa lata od premiery uznanej przez krytyków i fanów płyty „Turn of the Wheel”, która ukazała się na początku pandemii Covid-19 i dlatego nigdy nie doczekała się właściwej koncertowej promocji. Stąd też zespół wiosną 2022 wypuścił wydawnictwo „Re-Turn of the Wheel”. To album “towarzyszący” poprzedniej płycie, a zawierający osiem nowo nagranych utworów oraz akustyczną wersję utworu tytułowego. Całość zarejestrowano podczas pandemii. Na wersja winylowej oraz CD znajdzie się również utwór „Make it Right”, który stał się ulubieńcem fanów w serwisach streamingowych, a który został pominięty w oryginalnej wersji winylowej ze względu na ograniczenia czasowe. „Re-Turn of the Wheel” jest ósmym pełnowymiarowym wydawnictwem The Steepwater Band.

AC/DC once said, If you got the dollar, we got the song / Just wanna boogie woogie all night long, and The Steepwater Band surely embodies this lip-smacking urge to get some in this mean old world, befitting the group's Chicago roots and their earthy understanding of crackling city blues.
The abiding, resounding passion inside this band is never in question. Dive into their seemingly endless catalog of songs just about anywhere, and the heart and muscle pumping away inside every track are palpable and present in a most pleasing way. Their sound is like a soundtrack for arm wrestling the devil and then drinking shots with him 'til sunrise after you've pinned him down.
